A RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE
TOWN OF LOS GATOS APPROVING AN AMENDMENT
TO TOWN'S POSITION CLASSIFICATION PLAN.
RESOLVED, that the Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos does
hereby approve and adopt an amendment to the Position Classification
Plan establishing the new classification of Lead Tree Trimmer /High
Climber (copy attached hereto).

LEAD TREE TRIMMER /HIGH CLIMBER
DEFINITION
AUGUST 1983
Positions in the classification of Lead Tree Trimmer /High Climber perform a variety
of semiskilled and skilled tree maintenance work which includes trimming and
climbing. Incumbents will use or operate a variety of hand and power tools,
climbing equipment, and light and some heavy motorized equipment.
The Lead Tree Trimmer /High Climber will work as a crew member and will supervise
and provide work assignments and technical direction for the Urban Forestry
employees.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from the Tree Trimmer /High Climber by the
ability to effectively plan and organize Urban Forestry activities and tasks
and supervise field employees.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Supervises the work of others, is responsible for.maintaining Department
standards.
- Plans and organizes daily work activities for Urban Forestry crews.
- Prepares work related reports and keeps appropriate records.
- Plants, transplants, trims, and removes trees of varying heights and
configurations. May utilize climbing equipment or an aerial (bucket) truck
to accomplish this work.
- Removes tree stumps with stump grinder or truck and chain gear.
- Operates a variety of power and motorized equipment, including but not limited
to chain saws, brush chipper, stump grinder, tractors, forklifts, dump trucks,
aerial truck, air compressor, concrete saw, auger, and high pressure sprayer.
- Maintains equipment and sharpens tools.
- Sets up traffic cones and directs traffic as required.
- Applies chemicals to trees and shrubs.
- May perform surgical cavity work entailing the cleaning and dressing of tree
cavities and wounds, does cabling and bracing.

- Deals with the public in answering questions and receiving complaints.
- Maintains basic work records.
- As necessary, works protracted or irregular hours in the performance of storm
patrol and emergency repair work.
- Assists in the general cleaning and the maintenance of the Corporation Yard.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade and three years of experience
in tree maintenance work, including training in high climbing. Additional
qualifying experience may be substituted for up to two years of the desired
education requirement on a year- for -year basis. College level course work in
horticulture or arboriculture may be substituted for up to one year of the
desired experience on a year- for -year basis.
Knowledge of:
Techniques, tools and equipment used in tree maintenance work; knowledge of tree
species, chemicals and insects; and safe work practices:
Ability to:
Effectively and safely climb trees and to use tools and equipment related to
tree trimming and climbing; perform heavy physical labor; operate trucks and
other light motorized equipment; work in inclement weather; work extended or
irregular hours; understand and follow verbal and written instructions; acc-
urately maintain basic records; and maintain effective working relationships
with other Town personnel and with the public.
Driver's License:
Possession of a valid appropriate State of California driver's license.
Certification:
Pest control applications certificate is desirable.
