A RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE
TOWN OF LOS GATOS APPROVING AN AMENDMENT
TO TOWN'S POSITION CLASSIFICATION PLAN.
RESOLVED, that the Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos does
hereby approve and adopt an amendment to the Position Classification
Plan establishing new classifications and revising existing classifi-
cations (copies of which are attached hereto),

The Administrative Aide performs a variety of advanced clerical and

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from other secretarial classes on the
basis of the degree of confidentiality that must be maintained and the
initiative and tact used in dealing with other Town employees and vendors and
suppliers of services and supplies to the Town and the paraprofessional nature
of tine tasks performed.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Performs a variety of purchasing tasks.
- Reviews certain Town bills for accuracy and cost distribution to Town
departments.
- In charge of store room.
- Answers the phone and greets personnel applicants.
- Maintains personnel files and records.
- Assists in completing surveys and gathering data.
- Processes workers' compensation matters.
- Assists in the recruitment process.
- Maintains fixed asset inventory.
- Required to operate computer terminal.

The Community Service Officer I performs a variety of duties in support of the
Police Department function. Worm is performed under the direct supervision of
the Police Support Services Assistant.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from the Community Service Officer II
classification by the latter class's legal responsibility associated with the
processing of evidence and property. This classification is distinguished from
the Police Officer classification in that it does not have sworn officer
status.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Checks for vehicle parking violations and when appropriate issues notices
of violation and /or infractions.
- Answers the telephone and provides assistance and information to the
public.
- Drives vehicles to and frow the corporation yard.
- Assists other police support personnel.
- Operates a variety of office equipment.
MINI�UM QUALIFICATIONS
Age. Not under 18.
Education and Experience: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Knowledge of: Basic office procedures, correspondence forms and correct
punctuation, spelling, grammar and vocabulary.
Ability to: Understand and follow oral and written instructions; operate
standard office equipment; respond to call back and be assigned to work
hours other than normal office hours and with days off other than Saturday
and Sunday; deal courteously and effectively with others; to learn,

This classification is distinguished from the class of Senior Deputy Town Clerk
in that the latter has additional duties and acts in the absence of the Town
Clerk.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Accepts and records payment from the public for a variety of Town fees.
- Greets and provides information to the public at the counter.
- Responsible for updating Town Code.
- Responsible for balancing out the cash register.
- Delivering cash receipts to the bank.
- Distributes incoming mail to Town departments.
- Answers the phone and provides information to the public.
- Prepares Business License billings.
- Assists the public in completing business licenses and other applications
at the counter.
- Receives and records revenues collected by the Town.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: _ Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade
and one year of general clerical experience.
Knowledge of: Office practices and procedures, basic mathematics,
correspondence forms, correction punctuation, spelling, grammar and
vocabulary, and records retention systems.
Ability to: Operate a variety of office equipment, including word

The Plan Check Engineer performs plan checks of construction plans as required
for the issuance of a building permit. Work is performed under general
supervision.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from the engineering classification series
in that the scope of the work is limited to construction plan review.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Checks structural calculations submitted with construction plans for
compliance with building design criteria.
- Reviews construction plans for compliance to State regulations applicable
to buildings including fire safety, energy conservation and handicapped
access.
- Provides assistance to architects, engineers, contractors, trades people,
and homeowners regarding codes and regulations.
- Approves plans for construction.

Education and Experience: Equivalent to the completion of two year college

experience in code enforcement or plan checking. Additional qualifying

A police sergeant is responsible for the supervision of police officers in
patrol, investigation, crime prevention, community relations, intelligence
gathering and coordination or other law enforcement activities. Work is
performed under general direction.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from the Police Officer class in that the
latter does not have supervisory responsibility.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Trains, supervises and advises police officers, community service officers
and reserve officers.
- Supervises and coordinates preventive patrol and case investigations.
- Takes reports and conducts investigations.
- Reviews, approves or requires correction of subordinates' reports.
- Prepares performance evaluations and coaches subordinates.
- Assesses law enforcement, traffic and personnel problems.
- Maintains necessary contact with other law enforcement agencies.
- Supervises, oversees, assigns and coordinates case report and intelligence
follow-up investigations.
- Interviews persons; conducts investigations and prepares reports.

full-time, paid local law enforcement experience.

identification techniques and the control of juvenile delinquency; criminal
law, with particular reference to apprehension, arrest, and custody of

Education and Experience: At least sixty (60) semester units of college

as full time, paid supervision or administration in the field of law

The Police Support Services Assistant performs a variety of advanced administrative
tasks for the Support Services Division and is in charge of the Records,
Evidence /Property, and Equipment Maintenance Units. work is performed under the
general direction of the Support Services Lieutenant.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
- Supervision and organization of the personnel and work of the Records, Evidence/
Property and Equipment Maintenance Units.
- Trains, evaluates and recommends hiring and termination of assigned personnel.
- Uses technical knowledge to interpret and ensure compliance with laws and depart-
ment policy governing police records and evidence /property.
- Responsible for the secure retention and legal disposal of evidence and found
property.
- Complies with legal requirements and performs necessary duties as "Custodian
of Records" and "Records Security Officer."
- Maintains confidential files and records, and prepares correspondence regarding
criminal matters.
Researches, prepares and recommends revisions to written department policies
and procedures pertaining to areas of assigned responsibility.
- Responsible for the ordering, storage and issuance of all department supplies
and equipment.
- Implements specialized reporting and records automation on computer system.
- Represents the police department with city, county and state law enforcement
agencies and associations and with the general public regarding areas of assigned
responsibility.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Broad experience in records management and office procedures, including recent
experience in a supervisory position in, or closely involved with, a law enforce-
ment agency.
Degree in public or business administration, criminal justice, or a related
field is preferred.
Knowledge o£: Knowledge of office management principles, methods and procedures;
the secure maintenance of confidential records and files; and the use of comput-
erized information systems.
Ability to: Analyze workloads and equitably apportion duties among subordinates;
to solve problems of organization and personnel; deal effectively with the
public, news media, and other law enforcement agencies; establish and maintain
all department supplies and equipment inventories; oversee the efficient and
secure operation of the department's evidence and property function; oversee

The Utility Service Worker performs semi- skilled and skilled work in the
operation of the vehicle maintenance program. Work is performed under close to
general supervision.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Utility Service Worker classification is distinguished from other
maintenance classifications due to the specialized skills and knowledge
necessary to perform the vehicle maintenance work.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Performs a variety of servicing tasks in connection with the maintenance
and repair of the Town's vehicle and equipment fleet (including
lubrications, tune -ups, minor repairs, oil changes, fuel level checks, and
the fueling of vehicles and equipment).
- Uses a variety of shop equipment and tools.
- Pick -up and delivery of vehicles for service and /or repair.
- rick -up of parts and supplies.
- Cleans and washes vehicles and equipment.
- iiiakes emergency road service calls.
- Assists in the overhaul and rebuilding of major automotive components.
- Maintains repair records by equipment number, maintains an inventory of
shop supplies and parts, and locates and orders non -stock parts.

emergency circumstances.

Education and Experience: Equivalent to the completion of the tenth grade

twelfth grade. The one year experience requirement may be substituted by
one year of post - secondary course work related to automotive maintenance
and repair including some practical course work involving equipment
maintenance.
Knowledge of: Lubricating materials, tools and devices; tire maintenance
and repair; common automotive parts and supplies; standard mechanics tools
and equipment; methods and techniques for maintaining maintenance and
supply records.
Ability lity to: Follow written and oral instructions, perform semi-skilled and
