A RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE
TOWN OF LOS GATOS APPROVING AMENDMENTS
TO THE TOWN'S CLASSIFICATION PLAN.
RESOLVED, that the Town Council hereby approves and adopts the
amended job classifications and descriptions for specified positions
in the Parks and Public Works Departments, copies of which are attached
hereto.

SWEEPER OPERATOR
DEFINITION
Positions in the classification of Sweeper Operator perform semiskilled and
skilled work in the operation of motorized street sweepers on designated
routes. Incumbents will also perform minor maintenance on the equipment,
including greasing and the changing of brooms.
Work is performed independently, but in accordance with a predetermined route
schedule.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class differs from that of Equipment Operator and the Maintenance Worker
series in the specialized type of equipment operated.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Operates a motorized street sweeper in the cleaning of streets along
prescribed routes. Maintains records of areas swept and reports trouble
areas, such as street lights which are out, overhanging tree limbs, pot-
holes, and similar problems.
- Conducts a safety check of the equipment prior to its operation, and does
minor maintenance on it, such as greasing fittings, changing brooms, and
adjusting brooms.
- Works in emergency storm patrol, reporting problems and damage and setting
up traffic control devices as needed. May work irregular hours or extended
hours in connection with this function or in the performance of emergency
repair work.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Equivalent to completion of the eighth
grade and one year of experience in the operation of motorized
sweeper, large trucks or heavy construction equipment.
Knowledge of: The operation and basic maintenance of motorized
sweepers; street locations; and safe work practices.
Ability to: Efficiently and safely operate the equipment and to
make minor adjustments and repairs; work in inclement weather; work
extended or irregular hours; interpret route maps and schedules;
understand and follow verbal and written instructions; accurately
maintain basic records; and maintain effective working relationships
with other Town personnel and with the public.
Driver's License: Possession of a valid appropriate State of California

PARK MAINTENANCE WORKER I
DEFINITION
Positions in the classification of Park Maintenance Worker I are assigned to a
variety of unskilled and semiskilled tasks in the maintenance of park grounds,
equipment and buildings. Incumbents will use a variety of hand and power
tools, and operate light motorized equipment.
Work is performed under close to general supervision depending on the com-
plexity of the task and the skills of the incumbent. Positions in this
classification may provide limited work direction to part -time and temporary
personnel and to less experienced employees in this classification.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the experienced, entry -level classification in the Park Maintenance
Worker series. Employees at this level are not considered trainees and are
assigned many of the tasks which are also performed by employees in the
journey -level class of Park Maintenance Worker II. The principal distinctions
between the two classifications are that the Park Maintenance Worker II has
complete responsibility for all grounds and facilities maintenance in
designated geographical areas as assigned, and also may have leadworker respon-
sibilities for small crews which include Park Maintenance Worker I positions.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Mows, waters, weeds, plants and fertilizes parks and other landscaped
areas. Prunes and, as necessary, sprays shrubs and other planted areas.
- Clears grounds of litter and cleans pathways, fields, tennis courts and
buildings; may perform routine repairs to sprinkler systems, playgrounds,
fixtures, equipment, and buildings. Sets automatic irrigation controllers.
- Assists in maintenance and construction projects involving such tasks as
concrete work, equipment repair, sprinkler system repair and installation
and building repairs. Incumbents will normally serve as helpers to employees
in higher classifications.
- Uses a variety of hand and power tools in connection with the above duties;
operates pick -up trucks, dump trucks, power mowers and similar light, motor-
ized equipment; and may operate larger equipment for training purposes or in
emergencies only.
- As necessary, works protracted or irregular hours in the performance of storm
patrol and emergency repair work; works weekends on a rotating basis which
entails opening and closing parks, performing litter control, relieving the
parking attendant at Oak Meadow Park, collecting fees,and posting reserva-
tions.
- Assists in tree maintenance work as needed.
- Keeps work records.

- Reports incidents of vandalism; makes other basic reports as necessary.

Education and Experience: Equivalent to completion of the eighth grade
and one year of experience in parks maintenance work.
Knowledge of: Basic techniques, tools and equipment used in park main-
tenance; and safe work practices.
Ability to: Effectively and safely perform heavy physical labor, use a
variety of hand and power tools and operate light motorized equipment;
work in inclement weather; work extended or irregular hours; understand
and follow verbal and written instructions; and maintain effective work-
ing relationships with other Town personnel and with the public.

DEFINITION
Positions in the classification of Park Maintenance Worker II are assigned a
variety of semiskilled and skilled tasks in maintaining park grounds, equipment
and buildings in a designated geographical area. Incumbents will use a variety
of hand and power tools, and operate light motorized equipment.
Work is normally performed independently and in accordance with the daily work
schedule provided by supervisors. Positions in this classification may have
leadworker responsibilities for small crews which include temporary and part -
time personnel and /or Park Maintenance Worker I positions.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the journey -level classification in the Park Maintenance Worker series.
Duties of this class are distinguished from those assigned to Park Maintenance
Worker I in that they have complete responsibility for maintenance of all
grounds and facilities in designated geographic areas as assigned; may lead
small crews and operate a greater variety of motorized equipment.
This class is distinguished from that of Maintenance Worker III in that the
primary function of the latter class concerns skilled maintenance and con-
struction of park equipment and facilities. Positions at the II level may work
under the direction of the Park Maintenance Worker III on such projects.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Park Maintenance Worker II positions may perform any of the duties set forth in
the class specification for Park Maintenance Worker I. In addition, they will:
- Maintain all grounds, equipment and facilities in a designated geographical
area. The emphasis of work is on watering, weeding, pruning, trash control
and in performing minor repairs and custodial maintenance to restrooms.
Incumbents may independently maintain and repair sprinkler systems, plumbing
fixtures, and light standards.
- Use a variety of hand and power tools, and operate light motorized equipment
including, but not limited to, pick -up trucks, dump trucks, power mowers,
sprayers, tractors,and lift trucks. May occasionally operate heavier or
more complex equipment.
- May serve as a leadworker over small crews of part -time or temporary per-
sonnel and /or Park Maintenance Worker I's.
- Maintain a supply and inventory control system, which includes the
issuance of tools, parts and material to other park maintenance personnel.
- Make wooden signs, using router, planer, table saw, and drill press.
- Assist in a variety of maintenance and construction projects under the
direction of the Park Maintenance Worker III. These projects include

building of concrete installations, installation of metal fences, painting,
and fabrication of walls, shelves, bins, playground and exercise equipment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Equivalent to completion of the tenth grade
and two years of experience in park maintenance, including some opera-
tion of light motorized equipment. Additional qualifying experience
or possession of appropriate park maintenance certificates may be sub-
stituted for up to two years of the desired education on a year- for -year
basis.
Knowledge of: Plant identification, pesticides, fertilizers, tech-
niques, tools, chemicals and equipment used in park maintenance; light
motorized equipment; automatic sprinkler systems; and safe work prac-
tices.
Ability to: Effectively and safely perform heavy physical labor; use a
variety of hand and power tools and operate light motorized equipment;
direct the work of other employees; work in inclement weather; work
extended or irregular hours; understand and follow verbal and written
instructions; accurately maintain basic records; and maintain effective
working relationships with other Town personnel and with the public.

PARKS MAINTENANCE WORKER III
DEFINITION
January 1982
The positions in the classification of Park Maintenance III are assigned a
variety of semiskilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance and construction
of park equipment and buildings. The incumbent also performs grounds main-
tenance taks, but this function is normally secondary to this position's
maintenance and construction functions. Incumbents will use a variety of hand
and power tools, and operate light and some heavy motorized equipment.
Work is normally performed independently or under general supervision,
depending upon the project. This position does not serve as a leadworker on
a regular basis, but does direct the work of crews on assigned projects and at
times may lead other crews in general grounds maintenance.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the highest classification in the Park Maintenance Worker series. Its
duties differ from those of the Park Maintenance Worker II classification
through its emphasis on semiskilled and skilled maintenance and construction
tasks involving building trade knowledge, and supervision responsibilities
that may be assigned.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
The Park Maintenance Worker III position may perform any of the duties set
forth in the class specifications for Park Maintenance Worker I and II. In
addition, the incumbent will:
Perform a variety of carpentry, plumbing. electrical and concrete work not
requiring journey -level skills. These tasks include construction of ramps
and barbecue pits, roof repairs, building and installation of cabinets,
hanging of doors and the building and installation of wall partititions.
Performs arc and acetylene welding on fixtures and equipment such as trailer
hitches, stands for light standards and gates. In connection with this duty,
may also design and fabricate accessories to equipment.
- Install and repair automatic sprinkler systems. Repair other parks fixtures.
- Perform minor repairs on power mowers and on other small motors, with major
repairs either performed by the Equipment Shop or contracted out. Inspect
all Park Department trucks for safety and preventive maintenance purposes.
- Direct the work of part -time or temporary personnel and /or lower -level Park
Park Maintenance Workers on regular or a project basis.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Equivalent to the completion of the
twelfth grade and four years of experience which includes both
Park Maintenance Worker III

building and park maintenance. Additional, relevant training received
through an accredited vocational or trade school may be substituted for
up to two years of the desired experience on a year- for -year basis.
Knowledge of: Techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in
carpentry, plumbing, electrical, concrete and welding work; basic tech-
niques, chemicals, tools, and equipment used in grounds maintenance
work; light motorized equipment; small gasoline motors; and safe work
practices; estimation of materials needs for construction projects.
Ability to: Utilize a variety of trades skills; operate light motorized
equipment; direct the work of others; work in inclement weather; work
extended or irregular hours; interpret blueprints, drawings and
sketches; understand and follow verbal and written instructions; accu-
rately maintain basic records; and maintain effective working relation
ships with other Town personnel and with the public.

TREE TRIMMER /HIGH CLIMBER
DEFINITION
January 1982
Positions in the classification of Tree Trimmer /High Climber perform a variety
of semiskilled and skilled tree maintenance work which includes trimming and
climbing. Incumbents will use or operate a variety of hand and power tools,
climbing equipment, and light and some heavy motorized equipment.
Work is usually performed as a member of a two - person crew where a working
supervisor may or may not be present. Incumbents will generally not oversee
the work of other employees, but may occasionally instruct a park maintenance
worker or others temporarily assigned to the tree maintence crews as a helper.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from those in the Park Maintenance Worker
series by the specialized knowledges, skills and training required for
effective and safe performance of tree maintenance work.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Plants, transplants, trims, and removes trees of varying heights and
configurations. May utilize climbing equipment or an aerial (bucket)
truck to accomplish this work.
- Removes tree stumps with stump grinder or truck and chain gear.
- Operates a variety of power and motorized equipment, including but not
limited to chain saws, brush chipper, stump grinder, tractors, forklifts,
dump trucks, aerial truck, air compressor, concrete saw, auger, and high
pressure sprayer.
- Maintains equipment and sharpens tools.
- Sets up traffic cones and directs traffic as required.
- Applies chemicals to trees and shrubs.
- May perform surgical cavity work entailing the cleaning and dressing of
tree cavities and wounds, does cabling and bracing.
- Deals with the public in answering questions and receiving complaints.
- Maintains basic work records.
- As necessary, works protracted or irregular hours in the performance of
storm patrol and emergency repair work.
- Assists in the general cleaning and the maintenance of the Corporation Yard.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience: Equivalent to the completion of the 12th
Trade and three years of experience in tree maintenance work, includ-
ing training in high climbing. Additional qualifying experience may
be substituted for up to two years of the desired education requirement
on a year- for -year basis. College -level course work in horticulture or
arboriculture may be substituted for up to one year of the desired
experience on a year- for -year basis.
Knowledge of: Techniques, tools and equipment used in tree maintenance
work; knowledge of tree species, chemicals and insects; and safe work
practices.
Ability to: Effectively and safely climb trees and to use tools and
equipment related to tree trimming and climbing; perform heavy physical.
labor; operate trucks and other light motorized equipment; work in
inclement weather; work extended or irregular hours; understand and
follow verbal and written instructions; accurately maintain basic
records; and maintain effective working relationships with other Town
personnel and with the public.

Positions in the classification of Building Maintenance Worker I are assigned
a variety of unskilled and semiskilled tasks in connection with janitorial
maintenance, building maintenance and building security. The majority of work
is performed at the Town Center complex and entails shift work.
The degree of supervision provided to employees in this classification will
vary depending upon the shift assignment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this classification are distinguished from those in the higher
classification of Building Maintenance Worker II in that positions at the lower
level will have a greater emphasis on janitorial work. Positions in this
classification may provide limited work direction to less experienced employees
in this classification.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Performs the full range of janitorial tasks associated with cleaning office
buildings. These include: mopping, cleaning and waxing floors; dusting
and waxing furniture and counters; cleaning and restocking restrooms; moving
furniture; emptying trash; washing windows; and vacuuming and shampooing
carpets and upholstered furniture.
- Performs routine building maintenance tasks involving basic plumbing, car-
pentry, painting and electrical skills. These include, but are not limited
to, adjustment of doors, clearing of drains, and replacing light switches
and ballasts.
- Checks for proper operation of the central heating and cooling system. Makes
minor repairs such as the changing of belts, and contacts contractors where
significant malfunctions occur.
- Clears drains and inspects roofs for leaks; patches roof as necessary.
- Opens and secures buildings, sets up for meetings, maintains a partial
inventory on stationery and stores and performs related support services.
- Maintains tools used in conjunction with building maintenance tasks.
- May work protracted hours due to evening meetings or under emergency
circumstances.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

DEFINITION
January 1982
Positions in the classification of Equipment Mechanic perform semiskilled and
skilled work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of equipment. These
include passenger cars, police vehicles, trucks, construction equipment and
related units. Work assignments of this class include servicing of diesel -
powered equipment.
Work is performed under general supervision, and in accordance with established
policy concerning service priorities. Incumbents will normally not direct the
work of other personnel except in instances where maintenance workers are
temporarily assigned to the shop as helpers. Work performed may require shift
assignments and protracted hours for emergency circumstances.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from other maintenance - oriented classes
through the specialized knowledge, skills and training required for the per-
formance of journeyman -level vehicle maintenance work.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Performs a wide variety of servicing, maintenance and repair work involving
all mechanical components, parts and accessories. This includes overhaul
and rebuilding of components, rewiring and installation of specialized
safety equipment in police vehicles.
- Uses a variety of diagnostic equipment to determine sources of problems
and to ensure proper adjustment and operation of ignition, charging,
carburetion, and other systems.
- Establishes service priorities within established guidelines.
- Operates welding equipment in making repairs and in fabrocating special
parts and tools.
- Road tests and otherwise checks vehicles for proper operation and for
detecting the source of problems.
- Makes emergency road service calls.
- Maintains repair records by equipment number, maintains an inventory of
shop supplies and parts, and locates and orders non -stock parts.
- Maintains and repairs shop equipment and cleans shop area.
- May provide input on vehicle specifications and on the purchase of
shop tools and equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience: Completion of the twelfth grade and three
Years of experience as a journeyman mechanic, including the maintenance
of diesel engines and heavy equipment. Additional qualifying experience
may be substituted for up to two years of the desired education on a
year- for -year basis.
Knowledge of: Current procedures, tools and equipment used in the main-
tenance of automotive and heavy equipment; basic principles of diesel
engines; diagnostic equipment; and safe work practices.
Ability to: Accurately diagnose and repair malfunctions in a wide
variety of mechanical components; exercise initiative and judgment in
the performance of work; perform moderate physical labor; and
maintain effective working relationships with other Town personnel,
suppliers and contractors.
Driver's License: Possession of a valid, appropriate State of Cali-
fornia driver's license.
Certificates: State - issued smog, light, and similar vehicle maintenance
certificates are desirable.

MAINTENANCE WORKER I
DEFINITION
January 1982
Positions in the classification of Maintenance Worker I perform a variety of
unskilled and semiskilled tasks in the maintenance of streets, sewers and
related public works installations. Incumbents will use a variety of hand and
power tools, and operate some light motorized equipment.
Work is performed under close to general supervision, depending on the
complexity of the task and the skills of the incumbent. Positions in this
classification may provide limited work direction to less experienced employees
in this classification.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry -level classification in the Maintenance Worker series.
Employees at this level are initially considered trainees. Subsequently they
may be assigned many of the tasks which are also performed by employees in the
journey -level class of Maintenance Worker II. The primary distinctions between
the two classifications are that the Maintenance Worker I performs at a lower
skill level and normally does not have experience and skills in all of the
Maintenance Division's primary functions, i.e., street paving, sewer mainte-
nance, street painting, concrete work, sign fabrication and painting; and
general construction and maintenance. Positions in this class rarely work
independently and operate the lightest and least sophisticated motorized equip-
ment.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Assists in preparing streets for patching and resurfacing, and in applying
oil, asphalt, concrete, gravel and other materials. Such work includes the
hand - sweeping of street surfaces, loading of materials, and the raking and
shoveling of asphalt.
- Assists in the maintenance and construction of concrete installations such
as curbs, gutters and catch basins. Such duties include removal of obstruc-
tions such as tree roots; breaking up and removing concrete; construction of
forms; and mixing, pouring, and finishing of concrete.
- Assists in the cleaning, maintenance, repair and installation of sewer lines.
May operate flushing and rodding equipment under the direction of a higher -
level classification.
- Assists in street painting and striping, including the marking of streets for
line painting; the painting of curb and pavement messages; and the cleaning
and maintenance of equipment such as stencils, hoses and spray guns.
- Assists in a variety of maintenance and construction projects involving
retaining walls, guardrails, planter boxes, and other installations.
- Assists in the fabrication and installation of signs and in the replacement
of street and traffic lights.

MAINTENANCE WORKER II
DEFINITION

Positions in the classification of Maintenance Worker II perform a variety of
semiskilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance of streets, sewers and related
public works installations. Incumbents will use a variety of hand and power
tools and operate all types of light motorized equipment.
Work is normally performed under general supervision. Incumbents may be
assigned a helper on a regular basis or may occasionally direct a small crew
of from one to three workers.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This it the journey -level classification in the Maintenance Worker series.
Generally, all incumbents will have had experience in the majority of the
Maintenance Division's primary functions, i.e., street paving; sewer main-
tenance; street painting; concrete work; sign fabrication and painting; and
general construction and maintenance. This overall higher level of skill
represents one factor which distinguishes the work performed by this classi-
fication from that of Maintenance Worker I. The other distinguishing
characteristics between the two classifications are the occasional or periodic
responsibilities of Maintenance Worker Its in directing the work of small crews
and in the operation of heavier and /or more sophisticated motorized equipment.
This class is distinguished from that of Maintenance Worker III in that the
latter will spend over 50% of the time in the operation of light and some heavy
equipment and in leading crews.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Maintenance Worker II positions may perform any of the duties set forth in the
class specification for Maintenance Worker I. In addition, they will:
- Serve as the leader of the sewer cleaning crew. In this connection, the
incumbent will locate the proper sewer lines through maps, operate rodding
and flushing equipment, and instruct and direct the work of a helper.
- Serve as the leader of a paint crew. In this connection, the incumbent
will paint traffic messages on curbs, pavements and crosswalks and instruct
and direct the work of a helper. The position assigned to this function will
also fabricate and paint street signs and may mark streets for the painting
of traffic lines by the striping crew.
- Perform the more skilled manual work on maintenance, repair and construction
projects such as street patching and resurfacing, concrete finishing, and
installation of guardrails, retaining walls, and sewer lines.
- May operate welding equipment in connection with the above duties.
- Operate a variety of trucks and other light equipment. May operate larger
or more complex equipment for training purposes or in emergencies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Equivalent to completion of the tenth
grade and two years of experience in construction and maintenance
work, including some operation of light, motorized equipment. Addi-
tional qualifying experience, or possession of appropriate public works
maintenance certificates, may be substituted for up to two years of the
desired education on a year- for -year basis.
Knowledge of: Techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in public

The Maintenance Worker III performs a variety of semiskilled and skilled tasks
in the maintenance of streets, sewers and related public works installations.
The incumbent performs the full range of public works maintenance tasks.
The position performs leadworker functions on a regular basis, and also will
regularly operate light and heavy equipment.
While working under general supervision, responsible for: ordering materials
for jobs; participating in and overseeing the work performed; giving instruc-
tions; inspecting work; and insuring that safety rules are observed.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from the class of Maintenance Worker II
through regular responsibilities as leadworkers and for the operation of light
and heavy construction equipment on a regular basis. Maintenance Worker II
positions will spend substantially less than 50% of their time on crew leader
and equipment operator assignments. When such work is performed, the crews
directed are generally smaller and the range of equipment operated is also
smaller.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Maintenance Worker III positions may perform any of the duties set forth in
the class specifications for Maintenance Worker I and II. In addition, they
will:
- Serve as leadworkers over crews ranging up to thirteen employees. Under
direction, they will order materials for jobs, assign work, instruct members
in the performance of the work, inspect work performed, insure the observance
of safety rules and maintain necessary job records.
- Operate all types of trucks, and light and heavy equipment. The operation
of heavier construction equipment will normally be done in the absence of
the Equipment Operator and may include operation of the motor grader
for training purposes or under emergency circumstances.
- May work irregular or extended hours in the performance of emergency duties.
- Maintains records on time and materials, accidents and related subjects.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth
grade and four years of experience in public works construction I and
maintenance, including one year in the operation of light and heavy
equipment.

Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the desired
education on a year- for -year basis. Additional training received
through accredited trade or vocational schools, or through adult
education courses, may be substituted for up to two years of the
desired experience.

practices and department rules governing them.

The position of Equipment Operator performs skilled tasks in the operation of
all light and heavy construction equipment.
It is performed under general supervision. The incumbent may serve as a crew
leader and also train lower - skilled personnel in the operation of light and
heavy construction equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class differs from Maintenance Worker classifications through regular
operation of the heaviest and most sophisticated construction equipment
utilized by the Town.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Operates all light and heavy construction equipment, including the motor
grader, motor sweepers, loader /backhoe, oil distributor, loader, and aerial
truck.
- Serves periodically as a crew leader and trains lower - skilled employees in
the operation of construction equipment.
- Occasionally performs arc and acetylene welding in connection with the
fabrication or repair of equipment and accessories. The types of equip-
ment include fences, truck bodies, racks and trailer tongues.
- Occasionally performs a variety of semiskilled and skilled repairs to
buildings and equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- As assigned, works extended or irregular hours in the performance of
emergency duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Equivalent to completion of the tenth
