A RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN
OF LOS GATOS DECLARING JANUARY 15, 1982, AS
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY.
WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King (1929 -1968) was a national and world leader
in the nonviolent struggle to obtain full equality for all persons
regardless of race, religion or nationality; and
WHEREAS, Dr. King received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964; and
WHEREAS, the California Legislature has designated Dr. King's birthday, January 15,
as an official State holiday, requesting suitable exercises on that day
commemorating the accomplishments of the civil rights movement and calling
attention to the task that remains in accomplishing Dr. King's dream of
people of all races, religions and nationalities living together in love
and peace and justice; and
WHEREAS, a special service in memory of Dr. King and in honor of the principles he
espoused will take place on Friday evening, January 15, 1982, at Temple
Emanu -E1 in San Jose, addressed by Father Eugene Boyle, and sponsored by
the Anti - Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, the Catholic Commission on
Social Justice, the Council of Black Clergies, the Jewish Community
Relations Committee, the Mid - Peninsula Conversion Project, the National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National Conference
of Christians and Jews, the Santa Clara County Council of Churches, and
the Santa Clara County Human Relations Commission;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that January 15, 1982, be designated as a day of
remembrance in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King and the nonviolent prin-
ciples of equal opportunity which he espoused; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all persons, agencies, educational institutions and
organizations are encouraged to schedule suitable programs on January 15,
1982, commemorating the life and principles of DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING.
PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS, CALIFORNIA, at a
regular meeting held this 41h day of January 1982, by the
following vote:
