AN ORDINANCE OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS
AMENDING THE ZONING ORDINANCE WITH REGARD TO
RECYCLING COLLECTION FACILITIES AND REVERSE
VENDING MACHINES
THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS ORDAINS:
SECTION I
Section 2.00.401 is added to read:
Section 2.00.401 Recycling Collection Facility
A small collection facility is smaller than 500 square feet and intended for
the collection of recyclable material - s and can include kiosks, igloos,
trailers or Bulk Reverse Vending Machines. These facilities are generally tem-
porary.
A large collection facility is larger than 500 square feet and accepts
recyclable materials in large quantities for storage and eventual shipment.
This facility is generally a permanent structure.
SECTION II
Section 2.00.492 is added to read:
Section 2.00.492 Vending Machines
These are machines generally stocked with food or beverages in which money is
inserted for purchase of these items. These machines can also include those
which accept recyclable containers in exchange for a refund or redeemable
coupons. Such machines can include soft drink and food vending machines, ice
machines, water dispensers and Reverse Vending Machines.

SECTION III
Section 4.40.075 is added to read:
Section 4.40.075 Recycling Collection Facilities and Vending Machines
Small recycling collection facilities and vending machines may be permitted
outdoors subject to the approval of the Planning Director and shall be subject
to the following conditions:
1. The facilities cannot be located in any manner so as to decrease the
number of required on -site parking spaces.
2. -Vending machines and reverse vending- machi -nes are to -be located- indoors -
whenever possible and not more than two of these machines are permitted
outdoors unless grouped together within a common enclosure.
3. A trash receptacle is to be located within five feet of any facility.
4. The machines and facilities must be maintained on a scheduled basis so
as to ensure their general upkeep and cleanliness.
5. If a facility is proposed for a vacant lot, the lot must provide proper
traffic circulation consisting of an all weather surface, including one
on -site employee parking space, and an adequate drop -off area.
6. The facility must be located at least 50 feet from any residence.
7. The facility must provide for pedestrian circulation.

SECTION IV
Section 4.10.012 is added to read:
Section 4.10.012 Recycling Collection Facilities
Small recycling collection facilities may be permitted in residential zones
subject to the approval of the Planning Director and the Following conditions:
1. Prohibited from being located on the same lot as a residence.
2. Must be located a minimum of 50 feet from a residence.
3. _Prohibited from being located-in--an area_ so as to decrease the required
number of on -site parking spaces.
4. Prohibited from being located on a vacant lot.
5. N trash receptacle must be located within five (5) feet of any facili-
ty.

Section 5.20.205 is amended to read:

SECTION VI
Section 3.32.062 is added to read:
Section 3.32.062 Recycling and Vending Facilities
Recycling and Vending Facility signs shall not exceed two square feet plus one
square foot for every 100 square feet of facility or machine in excess of 100
total square feet of floor area.
SECTION VII
This ordinance takes effect 30 days after the date it is adopted. Within
15 _days after _this ordinance is-adopted the-Town Clerk shall cause it-to be
published once in a newspaper of general circulation published and circulated
in the Town.
This ordinance was introduced at a regular
meeting of the Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos on October 19 1987
and adopted by the following vote as an ordinance of the Town of Los Gatos at a
regular meeting of the Town Council on November 2 , 1987.
