SUMMARY MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION
COMMITTEE OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS FOR OCTOBER 6, 2004, HELD IN THE
TOWN COUNCIL CHAMBERS, 110 E MAIN STREET, LOS GATOS, CALIFORNIA.

The meeting was called to order at 5:35 P.M. by Chair Pacheco
ATTENDANCE
Members Present: Bob Cowan, Jeanne Drexel, Len Pacheco and Joanne Talesfore (arrived at
6:55 PM)
Absent: Kendra Burch
Staff Present: Sandy Baily, Associate Planner
ITEM 1: 18 N. SANTA CRUZ AVENUE
Withdrawn by applicant.
ITEM 2: 54 CHESTER STREET
The Committee considered revised plans to construct a second story addition on a pre-1941 single family
residence. Pacheco moved to recommend approval of the application to the Director of
Community Development subject to the following conditions:
1. At the north elevation, the tripane window in the gable end shall be changed to a squared top single pane
Palladian style window.
2. The post detail at the rear of the house shall be approximately two inches by three inches. An option can
include a rabbet cut on the post.
3. At the rear elevation, a lock rail shall be provided on the french doors.
4. At the west elevation, the chimney shall extend just above the finished grade so that it appears to not be
cantilevered.
5. At the east elevation, the three single pane windows shall be changed to a double hung window.
6. Siding material shall be real wood, not a composite, laminated or fabricated wood product.
7. All windows and doors shall be wood. No snap in grids or grids inside the windows are permitted.
Simulated wood grids are acceptable (ie: one glass pack with grids applied by manufacturer to inside,
outside and between glass), to read as a true divided lite window. Vinyl clad windows are not permitted.
8. All window trim, window finish detail, corner boards, soffits, eaves, millwork and any other
detail shall match existing.
Drexel seconded, motion passed unanimously.
ITEM 3: 100 ANDRE COURT
The Committee considered a referral by Town staff to determine whether or not a porch enclosure and a bay
window met the Pre-1941 Design Guidelines. The Committee stated that the porch was an add
on and was not historic. Drexel moved to find that the work proposed met the guidelines if the
following changes were incorporated in the plan:
1. At the rear elevation, the two windows that look like a slider shall be changed to double hung
windows.
2. The stucco shall wrap around the corner.
3. The belly band shall continue around the house.
Pacheco seconded, motion passed unanimously.
ITEM 4: 15 JACKSON STREET
The Committee considered plans to construct a second story addition to a pre-1941 single family residence.
Cowan moved to find that the proposal was compatible with the neighborhood and
recommended approval of the application to the Director of Community Development subject to
the following conditions:
1. The windows shall be changed to craftsman style windows with a single pane at the bottom and
multipane at the top.
2. At the rear elevation, the pair of French doors with side lights shall be changed to two panes with
a lock rail.
3. The overhangs shall be extended.
4. Gable brackets shall be added.
5. The carport shall have wider support columns and the lattice on the top shall have another layer
of two by twos or three by threes.
6. Siding material shall be real wood, not a composite, laminated or fabricated wood product.
7. All windows and doors shall be wood. No snap in grids or grids inside the windows are
permitted. Simulated wood grids are acceptable (ie: one glass pack with grids applied by
manufacturer to inside, outside and between glass), to read as a true divided lite window.

Talesfore arrived
ITEM 5: 16900 ROBERTS ROAD
Application heard last since architect arrived late. The Committee considered revised plans to demolish a
nonhistoric residence attached to a pre-1941 secondary dwelling unit and to construct a new
attached residence. The Committee found that the proposal was compatible with the eclectic
neighborhood. Talesfore moved to recommend approval of the application to the Development
Review Committee subject to the following conditions:
1. At the right and left elevation, incorporate a square bay with a shed roof with brackets on the
bottom.
2. The posts shall be made beefer.
3. The entry door shall be centered.
4. Add simple corbels or brackets.
5. At the front elevation, there shall be a pair of double hung windows.
6. Horizontal vents shall be used at the gable ends.
Pacheco seconded, motion passed unanimously. The Committee recommended that the applicant research the
possibility of providing an arbor/carport at the front elevation.
ITEM 6: OTHER BUSINESS
a. Special Meeting to discuss Commercial Design Guidelines. The Committee stated that
November 16th or 18th were acceptable dates at 10:30 AM.
b. Pre-1941 Design Guidelines- Cantilevered chimneys will be added to the list. Matter will be
continued to each meeting to allow members to add to the list of what needs to looked at
when the guidelines are revised.
ITEM 7: STATUS OF PREVIOUS APPLICATIONS
Baily informed the Committee on the status of previous applications.
ITEM 8: APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes from the meeting of September 1 and 13, 2004 were passed. Cowan abstained.
ITEM 9: ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 7:35 P.M. to the next regularly scheduled meeting of November 3,
2004.
