SUMMARY MINUTES OF A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION
COMMITTEE OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS FOR SEPTEMBER 17, 2003, HELD IN
TOWN COUNCIL CHAMBERS, 110 E MAIN STREET, LOS GATOS, CALIFORNIA.

The meeting was called to order at 5:35 P.M. by Chair Pacheco.
ATTENDANCE
Members Present: Kelly Blough, Susan Burnett, Jeanne Drexel, and Len Pacheco
Absent: Joanne Talesfore
Staff Present: Sandy Baily, Associate Planner
ITEM 1: 78 BENTLEY AVENUE
The Committee considered plans to change the material of the exterior railing for a multi-family
development in the University/Edelen Historic District. Pacheco moved to approve the
application subject to the following conditions:
1. An additional center post shall be provided with a metal cap at each bay.
2. The design of the railing shall include a horizontal piece that runs parallel from the top rail to
form a square opening below the balusters.
3. The top rail shall have a wood cap, five inches wide, to match the width of the post.
Drexel seconded, motion passed unanimously.
ITEM 2: 642 SAN BENITO AVENUE
The Committee reconsidered plans to construct a second story addition to a pre-1941 single family
residence. Pacheco moved to recommend approval of the application to the Director of
Community Development, subject to the following conditions:
4. At the front elevation, a tiled projection shall be added over the porch area as existing and an
eyebrow shall be added over the stairwell windows.
5. The second floor stair well wall shall be straightened.
6. The roofing material noted on the roof plan and elevations are inconsistent. The roofing
material shall be terra cotta.
7. At the left elevation, the chimney shall be canted.
8. The size and number of lights for the upper windows shall be consistent.
9. Window lights shall be added to the upper portion of the rear door and the balcony doors.
10. The balcony railing shall be a wrought iron mission style.
11. All windows and doors shall be wood. No snap in grids or grids inside the windows are
permitted. Simulated wood grids are acceptable (ie: one glass pack with grids applied by
manufacturer to inside, outside and between glass), to read as a true divided light window.
Vinyl clad windows are not permitted.
12. The house can be restuccoed provided that the stucco will match the existing. The
replacement of the stucco will not classify as a demolition.
Drexel seconded, motion passed unanimously.
ITEM 3: ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 6:25 P.M. to a regular meeting on October 1, 2003.
