Ord 1813 - DESIGNATING STRUCTURES AS HISTORICALLY AND CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT (MARIA'S BERRY FARM)ORDINANCE 1813 ORDINANCE OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS DESIGNATING STRUCTURES AS HISTORICALLY AND CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT (MARIA'S BERRY FARM) THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS ORDAINS: SECTION I. The following structure is hereby designated historically culturally significant: HD -90 -1 Maria's Berry Farm (Main House and Water Tower) New York Avenue A detailed description of the designated structures, the characteristics which justify designation, and a map showing the location of the historic structures (Exhibit A), are part of this ordinance. SECTION II. The property listed is designated to be historic, architectural, or aesthetically significant for the reasons listed below: A. Property: Maria's Berry Farm, New York Avenue B. Historic Designation No.: HD -90 -1 C. Description of Designation: Primary residence and water tower D. Description or Characteristics which justify Designation: The primary residence was constructed by Senator /Judge Hastings as a Summer Home prior to the turn of the Century. The five bedroom, two bath house contains approximately 3,000 sq. ft., and most of the original fixtures remain intact. During the last 73 years, the various owners of the house have been involved in humane efforts. For example, during World War I, the house was used for packing and shipping much needed supplies to both American and German troops. Most recently, the residence provided housing for numerous low income persons. The water tower is one of the few water towers that still remain in the Town. E. Description of particular features that should be preserved in addition to those covered under Section 4.86.120: None. SECTION III. The designated structures were originally located within the interchange of Route 85 and Highway 17. Since an interchange would have required the demolition of the designated structures, the structures were relocated to New York Avenue. SECTION IV. This ordinance shall rescind Historic Designation HD -87 -1, Ordinance No. 1734 (Exhibit B). -2- SECTION V. This ordinance takes effect 30 days after the date it is adopted. Within 15 days after this ordinance is adopted, the Town Clerk shall cause it to be published once in a newspaper of general circulation published and circulated in the Town. This ordinance was introduced at a regular meeting of the Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos on February 20 , 1990, and adopted by the following vote as an ordinance of the Town of Los Gatos at a regular meeting of the Town Council on March 5 , 1990.
