ORDINANCE OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS
AMENDING TOWN CODE SECTION 6.100.030
PROVIDING EXEMPTION FROM STRUCTURAL STRENGTHENING
FOR QUALIFIED UNREINFORCED MASONRY (URM) BUILDINGS
THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS DOES ORDAIN AS
FOLLOWS:
SECTION I
Section 6.100.030 of the Code of the Town of Los Gatos is amended to read as follows:
Sec. 6.100.030. Mitigation measures.
(a) Phase 1. Owners of unreinforced masonry buildings shall provide complete plans
and calculations for seismic upgrades by March 1, 1991.
(b) Phase 2. Owners of unreinforced masonry buildings shall complete all work
related to seismic upgrades by May 1, 1993.
Exception: Buildings that meet all of the following shall be exempt from
requirements (a) and (b) above:
1. That the building is of single story construction as defined in the Uniform
Building Code (UBC);
2. That the URM portion of the building is less than 900 square feet;
3. The occupant load of the URM portion of the building shall not exceed 12
based on Table 33A of the UBC;
4. The building is of regular shape and design as defined in the UBC; and
5. Provide certification from a licensed design professional that there are no
existing structural decencies as defined in Section 302 (items: 3, 5, 6, 7, 8,
10, 11) of the Uniform Code for the Abatement of Dangerous Buildings.
However, the Building Official may require structural strengthening if the Building
Official determines that the existing condition of the building has deteriorated or
if substantial renovations or improvements to the building are to be undertaken.

SECTION II
This Ordinance was introduced at a regular meeting of the Town Council of the
Town of Los Gatos on June 7, 1993, and adopted by the following vote as an Ordinance
of the Town of Los Gatos at a regular meeting of the Town Council on June 21, 1993.
This ordinance takes effect 30 days after, it is adopted.
