ORDINANCE OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS
AMENDING CHAPTER 9 OF THE TOWN CODE REGULATING THE
INSTALLATION OF ROOFS IN THE HAZARDOUS FIRE AREA AND
CHAPTER 6 OF THE TOWN CODE REGULATING THE INSTALLATION
OF ROOFING TILES OVER EXISTING WOOD ROOFS
THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS DOES ORDAIN AS
FOLLOWS:
SECTION I
Section 6.30.030 of the Buildings and Building Regulations of the Town Los Gatos is added
to read as follows:
Sec. 6.30.030. Same - Appendix Section 3213, Tiles.
Subsection 3213 is amended to read:
Sec. 3213.(a) General.Tile roofs may be applied over existing roof coverings when
approved by the Building Official.
Subsection 3213(b) is added to the code adopted by this article to read:
"(b) Overlays Creating an Air Space.Roofing tiles of any type shall not
be applied over any existing wood roofing material where an air space is
created between the wood roofing material and the tile above."
Sec. 6.30.035. Same- Appendix Section 3214, Metal Roofing.
Subsection 3214 is amended to read:

Sec. 3214.(a) General.Reroofing with metal roofing shall be in accordance with the
original manufacturer's specifications or when the original manufacturer's
specifications are no longer available as required by Section 3208 (b)6.
Subsection 3214(b) is added to the code adopted by this article to read:
"(b) Overlays Creating an Air Space.Metal roofing tiles of any type shall not
be applied over any existing wood roofing material where an air space is created
between the wood roofing material and the tile above."
SECTION II
Section 9.30.130 of the Fire Prevention and Protection Ordinance of the Town of Los Gatos
is amended to read as follows:
Sec. 9.30.130. Roof Coverings.
Section 24 is added to Appendix IIA to the Uniform Fire Code adopted in this
article as follows:
'Roof coverings on all buildings in hazardous fire areas shall be fire-
retardant, and shall comply with the standards established for the Uniform
Building Code Class A prepared or built -up roofing. The Town shall by
resolution establish hazardous fire areas. Re- roofing of existing buildings
shall comply with the above, except that any re- roofing of less than ten (10)
percent of the total roof area of any building shall be exempt from this
requirement. When additions are made to existing buildings that exceed ten

(10) percent of the total roof area, the addition shall comply with this
'section."
SECTION IV
This Ordinance was introduced at a regular meeting of the Town Council of the
Town of Los Gatos on February 1, 1993, and adopted by the following vote as an ordinance
of the Town of Los Gatos at a meeting of the Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos on
the 16th day of February, 1993. This ordinance takes effect 30 days after it is adopted.
